Jeff Lin is passionate about applying social science in innovative ways to address pressing public issues. He has worked in both academic and non-academic positions since earning his doctorate in sociology at New York University in 2005, but throughout his career his work has focused on research that had real-world implications for public and non-profit agencies. As a professor, he worked in partnership with numerous non-academic organizations on action- and policy-oriented research. For many years, these efforts centered on improving processes and outcomes in the criminal justice system. He has applied empirical findings to inform changes in juvenile justice institutions, criminal courts, community corrections, and prisons. He has also served as a consultant to numerous public agencies, applying social scientific research to deepen their effectiveness. Throughout all this work, he has developed a strong sense of the need for social scientific expertise in governmental and community organizations.
